The Vatican is an exceptional site of religious history that welcomes over 25,000 visitors daily. It is a world heritage site and sits on just over 100 acres. It is also the smallest country in the world at about one-eighth the size of Central Park.

The Vatican began with the construction of a basilica over Saint Peter's tomb in the 4th century AD. It quickly became a popular pilgrimage site and remained so for several centuries. It was Julius II who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling in 1508. Then the largest church in the world, St. Peter's Basilica was built in 1626. It is 452 feet tall and measures 5.7 acres.

How to get to the Vatican by public transport

One of the easiest ways to visit the Vatican and the iconic Sistine Chapel is to travel by public transport. Vatican City is just north of central Rome and is accessible and well connected by public transport. The nearest metro stop is Ottaviano on line A , which is the orange line and passes through the famous Trevi Fountain. You will stop on Via Ottaviano-S. Pietro station and St. Peter's Square are within a 5-minute walk.

Travel by train

Peter's Basilica has a train station called St. Pietro. Trains run through Rome and are commonly used by those traveling from Civitavecchia, which is Rome's cruise port. You will board the train at Roma Termini and get off at St. Pietro. After that, it's just a ten-minute walk to St. Peter's Square.

Travel by bus

There are a few different Rome city buses that stop near the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. Bus 49 stops in front of the Vatican. You can also take buses 40 and 64, which depart from Roma Termini. These buses pass through Piazza Venezia, which is a central point where many travel lines intersect. Bus 40 will stop at Piazza Pia, which is about a ten-minute walk from St. Peter's Square. Bus 64 stops at Terminal Gianicolo, which is just over ten minutes from the Vatican Museums. If you're seeing the Colosseum in advance, you can also take bus 81 from the Colosseum to Piazza Risorgimento, which is a five-minute walk from the Vatican Museums.
