Halloween is celebrated in a number of countries all over the world on the 31st of October. Weeks before this holiday people are busy trying to find the perfect costumes, the best candy for trick or treating and the scariest decorations for their houses. Whether you're dressing up as a sexy nurse or scary monster , you'll find the best Halloween coupons and deals on Halloween costumes, accessories and decorations at 1001couponcodes.co.nz. Halloween is the season for goblins and little ghosts take over the streets, scaring each other and asking for candy. Campfires are build where people can tell scary stories to one another, scary movies are taking over the television and theathers and pumpkims are being transformed into scary lanterns. But where is this holiday coming from? The roots of Halloween, also known as "All Hallows Eve" go back 2000 years ago to a Christian Celtic festival called Samhain, which was held around the 1st of November. The exact nature of Samhain is not completely understood, but history tells us that it was some sort of annual meeting at the end of the harvest year. According to folkorist John Santino it is also a time of communing with the dead. The festival provides some safe way to play with the concept of dead, just like Halloween nowadays. People dress up as zombies, mummy and other living dead creatures and they put fake gravestones or fake blood around their lawns and houses. The tradition of trick-or-treating might have something to do with the practice of 'mumming', which is way for people to disguise themselves and go from door to door while asking for food. The trick-or-treating can also be related to the medieval custom in Britain and Ireland that we call "souling", which lead to poor people knocking on doors and giving prayers for the dead in exchange for food. In New Zealand the custom of trick or treating didn't start until after the second World War, but children were known to go out on Thanksgiving and asking for food. Nowadays, the "trick" part is mostly an empty threat, but pranks have been a part of the holiday for a long time.
