Some points of our policies:
RANKING OF SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
To guide us on our sustainable materials journey, we use a Sustainable Materials Ranking that lists all the fibers we use and indicates their environmental impact, in line with existing industry standards. To classify fibers, we first categorize all the fibers we use, as well as those we specifically choose not to use. To ensure the most objective and up-to-date classification tool, fiber categorization is fully based on existing industry scoring tools and mechanisms. We include the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) ranking, the rigorous standards from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, the annual CanopyStyle Hot Button Ranking, and the Textile Exchange Preferred Material Benchmark. The result is a living tool.
NATURAL
Recycled cotton: Recycled cotton is produced from post-consumer or post-industrial waste. The use of recycled cotton saves raw materials, water, chemicals and energy and is therefore a great way to reduce environmental impact. The recycled cotton used in our products is certified according to the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) or the Global Recycling Standard (GRS).
Organic Cotton: Organic cotton fibers are free from toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Growing organic cotton helps improve soil quality, prevents water contamination and conserves biodiversity. By choosing organic cotton, we can save up to 60% of water compared to conventional cotton. The organic cotton used in our products is certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) or the Organic Content Standard (OCS).
BCI Cotton: G-Star RAW is a partner of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) . We also use BCI sourced cotton in our collection. By investing in this, we support the Better Cotton Initiative's mission to help cotton communities survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment. The Better Cotton Initiative applies a mass balance system, which means that cotton is blended with conventional cotton in a complex supply chain. The final product may therefore not contain Better Cotton. That's why we chose not to rate it.
Hemp: Hemp is a natural fiber that generally does not require the use of pesticides. In addition, it uses less water and is much stronger than conventional cotton. Linen: Linen is a fabric made from the fibers of the flax plant, which does not require a lot of energy or water resources to produce.
Conventional cotton: Many people think that cotton is inherently good because it is "natural". It's a renewable resource, which is good. But in reality, cotton can have an extremely harmful impact on people and the environment. This is because conventional cotton cultivation uses a lot of water, as well as toxic and polluting chemicals. Today, 99% of the cotton used in G-Star RAW products is sustainably sourced. Unethical cotton: By unethical cotton practices we mean cotton that is grown in circumstances with no respect for human rights, any form of forced labor, lack of healthy and safe working conditions for workers, and no or limited environmental protection. G-Star RAW prohibits suppliers from sourcing cotton from areas where ethical practices cannot be guaranteed.
