FONDAZIONE BENETTON The cultural work of the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche, first launched in 1987, now takes place in the historic centre of Treviso, in distinguished premises in via Cornarotta that were the subject of extensive restoration work completed in 2003. Under its President Luciano Benetton and directed by Marco Tamaro (who took over from Domenico Luciani, the landscape architect whose vision and energy were an inspiration from the beginning) the Foundation relies on a permanent working group to carry out most of its activities with the systematic support of scientific committees composed of scholars and experts of international renown. The main field of research concerns the design and management of landscape, of the places nearby and of places in all parts of the world, though in Europe and the Mediterranean basin in particular; projects are undertaken in the spirit of the European Landscape Convention and special attention is devoted to environmental issues of common interest.

The Benetton Archive was established in late 2009. Located in the Benetton Studios - a former Group manufacturing facility converted by architect Tobia Scarpa into a new multifunctional area - it serves two main purposes: Act as keeper of the 50-year heritage of Benetton, a world-renown fashion manufacturing company; Serve as a hothouse of ideas and creativity where the future is being written.Using the same experimental approach that is embedded in the Group's DNA, the Archive collects, preserves and promotes all the company's documents, and it meticulously recounts the inspirations, the values, the innovations and the phases of Benetton's history.

Requests to access the Archive and its services must be sent in writing (including email through the contact form at Contacts) and must be specifically authorized by the person responsible. The request must provide personal details, as well as the aims and content of the research.
THE ARCHIVE'S OFFICES AND HOLDINGS
The Archive occupies an area of 1,300 square metres, with a space dedicated exclusively to storage and an area for research and consultation that houses all the company's documents and is largely split among two main themes: product and communication.
Among the most interesting product items, historic knitwear is surely worth mentioning. The knitwear archive (housed in Ponzano) is organized by product categories and consists of 12,000 items. The archive includes other materials also, such as samples of fabric, sketches, weaving patterns from the 70s to date, a collection of knitting stitches, old fashion magazines, technical charts, colour palettes of the 70s and 80s, a yarn archive and colour and yarn references currently in use.
Communication materials include a wide collection of fashion editorials, catalogues, advertising campaigns, commercials, billboards, window display material, periodicals and photographic material from the mid-60s to the present. The Archive also preserves real-estate design plans (stores, plants, headquarters), and all the accounting and administrative documentation.
This area also houses some historic machinery (including the first dyeing vats, weaving machines and shoe making machines,) that bear witness to Benetton's steady technological evolution.
In addition to the Benetton Archive space, a display area of 2,000 square metres houses a selection of advertising campaigns tracing the history of the company's communication from the 60s to the present as well as 16 Formula One racing cars attesting to Benetton Group's 19-year participation - from 1983 to 2001 - in the world's highest-class racing championship.
ENHANCEMENT AND PROMOTION ACTIVITIES
The Benetton archive is fully consistent with the recent and popular trend for cultural appraisal through company and fashion archives. It is a valuable consultation tool for the Group's designers and collaborators and is accessible, upon request, to students, researchers and other professionals.
